Hence, you can have up to 16 instruments on one Ardour midi track. If you use Calf-fluidsynth you can select different instruments in a single SF2 file. Except for this!Īn Ardour midi track will handle 16 midi-channels. With other Linux sequencers like Qtractor, Soundgarden, Audacity, and Muze, it was like on Sonar, AFAIR, only with a different MIDI sound, but they had other limitations, so Ardour was better for me. It surprises me if it's not possible with Ardour.

It was a small SF, only 4 MB, and of course most of its 128 instruments sounded awfull, but it was convenient for getting a quick 'overview' of the MIDI file, especially when it was created by another, and afterward I could always change the sound. When I imported a MIDI file, I didn't need to select this synth for each track, and also, its tracks kept their instrument settings. Unless Fluidplug really is different in this respect.īefore I got Linux I used a sequencer called 'Sonar' on Windows, and my soundcard (SB Live) had a software synth with a standard 128 traditional instruments soundfont installed by default.
